Job Description: EQUIP School has an urgent need for a volunteer IT Specialist to support the existing team of staff and manage and maintain all aspects of the IT infrastructure consisting of a Microsoft Server 2008 based domain with ca. 40 workstations, 4 printers, 3 wireless routers as well as other networked devices. OSs on site: Windows XP, 7, Ubuntu.
You will deal with guest access to the network from staff and student laptops; interact and deal with issues on the distributed wireless system; maintain workstations’ hardware, OS, installed software and security; maintain intranet web server – two websites including a small main server.
You will also be joining a close-knit team so team skills are essential to the position.
Time commitment:Â 3-5 days a week.Â

In this position you will need to support and train computer users in the implementation and maintenance of technology in both language and business applications, in order to make people effective in using this technology to accomplish and enhance their work. Position Responsibilities: You will be responsible for a variety of computer related tasks such as computer training in both administrative and language applications, writing and maintaining computer programs, testing and repairing computer equipment, installing new components into existing systems, and advising on present and future computer applications. You will support both commercial software and SIL developed linguistic software as well as users in the areas of basic hardware maintenance, component swapping, network support, email use and administration, and publishing papers.
 Position Education Experience: MOUS Office Certification or MS Apps Levels I, II & III. Minimum two years experience in computer support related positions.
English Teacher – Papua New Guinea
Come and teach English/Language Arts in a Christian school in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Come for one year or make this your next career if you have at least one year of teaching experience. Position Description: You will be responsible for teaching secondary school pupils English at Ukarumpa International School where there are approximately 150-200 students representing 15+ nationalities, including Papua New Guineans. All school instruction is given in the English language. Levels of English instruction range from special needs, general English to AP English.
Position Education Experience: You will require a valid teaching certificate or equivalent and a minimum of 1 year teaching experience.

Centre Manager – Chad
 Chad is partly in the Sahara desert in the north with savannah and grasslands in the south. As varied as the geographical locations, are Chad’s people, languages and cultures. SIL Chad needs people who are willing to live and work under hard climatic and lifestyle conditions to enable these language groups to learn to read and write, and be able to have the Word of God in their heart language. This position is vital for the running of SIL Branch work, and one of many in need of someone in Chad right now; consider joining us and being part of our support team reaching out to the many still waiting to hear.
 Position Description: You will be responsible for the planning, coordinating and effecting of activities to provide construction, maintenance, repair, and operational services on the SIL Centre and in village locations as needed.
Position Education Experience: Field experience is preferred. You will need to have management training and experience. Good French is also required to work in Chad.

Linguists and those involved in Bible translation work come from all walks of life. EQUIP Training Language Institute trains them to learn a local language and culture, their initial task in Bible translation. They work with mother-tongue speakers to analyse the sound system and grammar of a language and produce a practical alphabet so it can be written. Increasingly, translators are working as translation advisors, or facilitators, training local translators in translation principles and providing exegetical expertise.
Length of service: Minimum 4 years.

Translated Scripture is inaccessible if people are unable to read it for themselves. More than 90% of the world’s poor are pre-literate. Literacy skills make a huge practical difference in their lives and allow them access to God’s Word in their own language. Literacy workers are needed to teach people to read, develop reading schemes, produce literature and train others to take responsibility.
Length of service: Minimum 4 years.

Language survey work is needed to determine translation needs. Survey can indicate the status of certain languages, whether related dialects are mutually intelligible or whether they need to be treated as separate languages and whether the Scriptures in a neighbouring language, national language or trade language are adequate to meet people’s needs. Survey specialists move from place to place in a language area comparing word lists and doing intelligibility testing using stories on tape. They also survey attitudes towards the local and other languages.

We have a desperate need for teachers. When suitable education options are not available for language workers’ children they may be forced to return to their home countries and Bible translation suffers. Opportunities range from one-room mixed-age classes, to inter-mission schools, to international schools with more than one curriculum geared to several different nationalities. Itinerant teachers are also needed to work with small groups of children in more remote settings for short periods of time, helping parents who teach their own children.
Teachers are needed around the world from Africa to Asia, from Eurasia to the Pacific.

Building and maintenance workers are needed to build and maintain facilities, translator housing, schools; install water systems, power lines and pipework; maintain vehicles and machinery; and repair equipment. Most positions include a supervisory and training role so technical training and some work experience are needed.

Computers are an essential part of Bible translation work. Trained computer specialists are needed for a variety of roles to work with a variety of equipment. They maintain computers, from laptops to network systems. They serve in desktop publishing, as graphic designers, programmers, repair technicians and consultants to translators. Computer personnel are also needed for troubleshooting, training, research and development.

Trained finance personnel are needed to channel the funds God supplies through his people. Good stewardship of this money means receiving, recording and dispersing funds accurately, and providing financial services such as banking, insurance and matters relating to pensions, taxes and income. Bookkeepers, accountants and those familiar with insurance and financial management are needed.

PAs and secretaries are another link in the Bible translation task. They handle the paperwork required to keep language teams doing the work they are trained for and to send others out. PAs and secretaries are needed in home offices and those overseas. Often the overseas assignments involve training and working alongside local people.

For translation work to proceed, essential administration must also be handled. General responsibilities include planning, organising, coordinating, staffing, encouraging, enabling colleagues to function effectively and training local people as managers.

Coordinating travel arrangements, purchasing and forwarding supplies, handling mail, radio and telephone links are just a few of the services which make language teams’ work easier and in some cases possible. People who are flexible, adaptable, enterprising and willing to do a wide variety of tasks are needed for these roles.
