An Intercultural Study Project
If you want to:
- experience what effective
cross-cultural workers have known and done for decades,
- reach out to a friend or contact and find out how they
think life works,
- engage in meaningful encounters with
others without losing their friendship,
- be culturally
sensitive on your next overseas trip,
- learn some anthropological
principles and their application for relating to others
and sharing your faith
Then Operation Encounter is for you!
Using some applied anthropology
this four-step training experience combined with field assignments
will equip you for culturally appropriate outreach and ministry
anywhere. Peel the cultural onion and get to the real core
of other people’s values and beliefs.
What you will experience:
There are four teaching sessions
of two and a half hours. The sessions include video clips,
case studies and discussion groups. Progressive teaching
on cultural behaviour, beliefs, values and reality by those
with cross-cultural experience is followed by field assignments.
The assignments involve completing a number of research questionnaires
with a non-Christian contact. The questionnaire and the relationship-building
process help them to consider issues relating to their spiritual
journey.
Comments from Participants
- 'I
found Encounter to be an easy solution to the dilemma
of knowing a workmate for years but not finding the appropriate
way to talk with them about life and the Kingdom of God.
It's particularly appropriate when your workmate has
come from another culture. With my workmate, we went
from me asking 'Why is that your favourite food?' to
him asking, 'Do you have any books on forgiveness?' within
three meetings. '
- 'I
thought that I knew my best friend who I went to school
with but I didn't have a clue. I was so wrong.'
